These rifles were manufactured in huge numbers, but in 1888 finances of the Mauser Company had been taken over by the giant German firm of Ludwig Loewe & Co of Berlin.

As such rifles are usually stamped Loewe Berlin 1888,1890, 1891 or simply Gew 88.

This rifle has both Gew 88 and 1890 marks.

Although these rifles will chamber standard 7.92 (8×57) ammo it is considered unwise and the lower velocity loads should be used.

Although manufactured in large numbers it is fairly rare to find one in this condition.

Fully matching numbers, a fine collectors rifle.
